THE DISCIPLINE OF LISTENING
Bible Reflection: Proverbs 1:5
“A wise man will hear and increase learning, and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsel.”
Listening is one of the most undervalued spiritual disciplines, yet it is one of the most powerful. Many people speak to God, but only a few take time to listen. Many pray for direction, yet they rush back into noise before God can answer.
Many want clarity, but they do not cultivate stillness long enough to hear the whisper of the Spirit.
Listening is not passive; it is intentional. It requires a quiet heart, a disciplined mind, and a willingness to silence internal and external distractions.
God speaks, but only hearts that are trained in listening can recognise His voice.
You cannot walk in wisdom if you do not hear wisdom.
You cannot grow spiritually if you cannot discern the instructions of the Spirit.
You cannot avoid costly mistakes if you cannot recognise when God is saying “No,” “Wait,” or “This is the way.”
The discipline of listening saves you from unnecessary battles, wrong relationships, wasted years, and repeated circles of error. It sharpens your discernment and aligns your spirit with divine timing.
Listening requires humility. It means admitting that you do not have all the answers, that your emotions cannot guide your destiny, and that your intellect is limited without the illumination of the Spirit.
Listening is how God trains your senses to recognise truth.
Elijah heard God in a still small voice.
Samuel trained himself to say, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears.”
To listen effectively, you must create moments of stillness, reduce noise and step back from unnecessary conversations.
