THE FOUR DIMENSIONS OF LOVE

The Bible reveals that love is not one-dimensional. It expresses itself in different ways.

  1. Agape – God’s Kind of Love

Agape is unconditional love. It is divine, sacrificial and self-giving. It does not love because it is loved back. It loves because that is its nature. This is the love God showed when He gave Christ for humanity. Agape chooses commitment over convenience.

  1. Phileo – Affectionate Love

Phileo is the love of friendship and emotional connection. It is based on mutual care, trust and shared values. It thrives on reciprocity. This is the love that binds friends, companions and partners who enjoy one another’s presence.

  1. Eros – Romantic and Physical Love

Eros is the love of attraction, romance and physical intimacy. It is powerful and beautiful when guided by discipline and covenant. But when it rules without wisdom, it becomes lust.

  1. Storge – Family Love

Storge is the love that comes from blood ties and deep familiarity. It is the affection between parents and children, siblings and relatives. It is natural, rooted in belonging and shared history.

In conclusion, a healthy relationship is not built on Eros alone.
It must be grounded in Agape, supported by Phileo, enriched by Eros, and stabilised by Storge-like loyalty

When lust leads, people use each other. When infatuation leads, people disappoint each other, but when love leads, people grow together.
