WHAT IS SIN?
(James 4:17)

Defining sin is one of the most challenging things for us as humans. Why? Because we often judge based on comparison and self-righteousness. We tend to see others as sinners while overlooking our own shortcomings.

Many believe sin is only about breaking the Ten Commandments or committing acts that society labels as wrong. While these are part of it, the Bible takes us deeper.

Apostle James gives a profound definition in James 4:17:
“Anyone who knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.”

This tells us something very important: sin is not only what we do wrong but also what we fail to do right. It is not just the commission of evil acts; it is also the omission of good deeds. (Commission and Omission)

Think about it: If you see someone in need and have the means to help but turn away, you have sinned.

If you know the truth and remain silent to protect your image, that is sin.

If you have the opportunity to forgive but choose to hold on to grudges, you have sinned. (Forgive us in the same manner we forgive others)

This makes us realize that sin is deeply personal. It is tied to the knowledge we have. God holds us accountable for what we know. (The more you know, the more you suffer)

Are you guilty of ignoring the good you should do? It might be an act of kindness, a call to prayer, or a word of encouragement.
