IRON SHARPENS IRON BUT CUTS WOOD OR PLASTIC
(Prov 27:17)

Part 2: Applications

The saying “iron sharpens iron” is a metaphor that suggests how people can help each other improve and grow through interaction and challenge.

Just as iron tools can sharpen each other, people can sharpen each other’s minds, skills, and character through constructive feedback, debate, and collaboration. (Do you have such friends or relationships that can sharpen you?)

The addition “but cuts wood or plastic” highlights the idea that iron is most effective when used on materials that are similar in nature, rather than trying to apply it to something that’s fundamentally different. (Be mindful of who you hang out with)

Surrounding yourself with people who challenge and support you can help you grow and improve as a person just like collaborating with colleagues and mentors can help you develop new skills and stay up-to-date with industry trends.

Likewise, working with people who have different perspectives and expertise can help you find creative solutions to complex problems.
